McMahon Charlotte Pre-Owned Truck Sales

Jason Stamper handles pre-owned truck sales for McMahon Truck Centers out of our Charlotte headquarters. He is a multiple-year Bulldog Gold Club honoree and regularly receives glowing reviews from customers. We interviewed Jason to find out more about his sales secrets…and about Jason himself.

Q: Multiple Google reviewers mention you specifically—and with glowing praise. What’s your secret?

I believe the secret to a long-lasting and SATISFIED customer relationship is getting people out of the guarded mindset that so many people have these days when making a larger, and life changing purchase, and rightfully so. Just because the transaction is a serious one, doesn’t mean the interaction between associate and client needs to be an uncomfortable one.

I do my best to treat people genuinely, like I would a longtime customer… It’s about making the conversation flow easier and brings us to other important matters about not only their needs in trucks but their needs in their businesses. As a previous business owner of a couple of companies, I find joy in helping guide my customers in the successes of their companies not just in the sale of the truck.

Q: How did you get into sales and why?

I started selling when I was 5 years old… I was in the Boy Scouts and on the back of a scouting magazine was a company that would give you $2 for every item you sold out of their catalog. So, I ordered their catalog and walked door-to-door in my neighborhood. I did so well I would go and sell almost quarterly around my neighborhood. I guess that’s when I got hooked on being in sales, I have done sales most ever since I can remember.

Q: When did you start at McMahon, and in what role?

I started with McMahon Truck Centers July of 2018 as the Pre-Owned Sales Professional in Charlotte.

Q: What are your current responsibilities and title at McMahon Truck Centers?

As a pre-owned sales professional at McMahon Truck Center in Charlotte I am responsible for overseeing the sales of our pre-owned inventory as well as the attributing requirements that come along with a sales position. … Marketing is KEY! Making sure the trucks are properly processed through our service center and we get a product that stands tall to the best of our abilities for our customers.

I try and find many things to do around the dealership, people to speak to in different departments…that might not be initially sales related, but it gets me thinking of other ways to help progress through not just my department but how we can help each other prosper in theirs.

Q: Do you work at other McMahon locations besides the Charlotte one?

I sell out of all of our location’s inventories, but my office is at our headquarters in Charlotte

Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy most the people: the ones I see every day, the ones I speak to every day, my co-workers. It brings a great level of joy to me to get to meet new people… You really never know who you’ll meet and what you have in common with that person.

Q: What volunteer activities or other outside-work groups are you involved with in the Charlotte area?

Prior to my oldest daughter leaving to play Fastpitch Softball for Valpo University I coached and consulted in coaching girls’ youth softball. The softball world has continued to try and pull me back into coaching. I might jump back in as I have two more daughters that play multiple sports including Fastpitch Softball, but right now this dad is taking a well-deserved break from going non-stop across the country till June 2023 with my oldest.

Q: What tips do you have for someone considering buying a truck or trucks?

Make sure you educate yourself on the overhead attributed to being in the industry, know your controllables and non-controllables. Know that we aren’t just selling you a truck, we are selling you a business, or expanding your business. For the first timers, know that there are no write up sheets for being tardy to your own workday for your company. As my favorite quote goes, “Failure is not our only punishment for laziness; there is also the success of others” – Jules Renard.

And last but not least – ALWAYS BUY THE WARRANTY!!!

Q: What things should someone consider when deciding whether to buy a new or a used truck?

I believe that anyone starting fresh in the industry should start with a pre-owned truck: easier to get a feel for things and how they are going to be without biting off more than you might be able to chew investment wise. The great thing about commercial truck sales is that after 8-10 months with responsible payments on your truck, you can refinance, expand, or trade-up on a newer unit. So, it doesn’t take long to build your empire, if you know how to be responsible with your revenue.

Q: Congratulations on the Mack Bulldog Club Gold Level honor. What other awards have you received?

Thank you, it was a lot juggling inventory and customers to get everyone in what they needed when they needed it in a quality yet timely fashion, but all the new people I had the pleasure of meeting and all the repeat customers I got to help expand their business was the best feeling!!

As far as awards go, I have maintained Mack Bulldog Club level status since 2019 till present. Other awards prior to coming to commercial truck sales were primarily sales and budget driven awards. But my favorite award was one that my parents gave me…in 2011 my parents gifted me Dale Carnegie courses at a local college here in Charlotte, and as of 2011 I am a certified Dale Carnegie graduate, which might not mean much to some, but Dale Carnegie’s approach to sales, and PEOPLE is hands down the most import I could imagine having in your corner, not just in sales but in life. It’s not a trick, it’s all about being genuine. “You’ll never be better than who you are.” – ME

Q: What else would you like people to know about you or McMahon Truck Centers?

McMahon Truck Centers and its associates, management team, and owners are the real deal. They are real people that see you for what and who you are, a real person. That’s something so hard to find these days in a world created by the “80’s business man” / “everyone’s just a number” mentality.

I will share with you the single greatest gift I could receive as an employee and father from McMahon Truck Centers. When my daughters come into work with me and the owner tells my daughter how important I am to the company, not the everyday “Hey kiddo, how ya doing?” small talk. He tells the person that I am the most important to in their eyes that “I am important to this company’s success, every day.” There is no price I can put on that level of sincere gratitude to another human being.
